Breeding Ewe Replacement Project

TVSP will donate a bred ewe lamb and the next year will make arrangements to have ewe exposed to a ram, if ram service is required.

Breeding Ewe Project Application

  • Submit application by September 1 to Don Sperry. See Below for contact information.
  • Applicant must have completed one year of a 4-H/FFA sheep project.
  • Applicant may not be older than a sophomore level in school.
  • Applicant must agree to practice good husbandry (feed, water, shelter, medical and etc.).
  • Applicant must agree to show ewe and lambs at the Treasure Valley Sheep Producers annual sheep EXPO.
  • Applicant must agree to show ewe and lambs at the Canyon County Fair.
  • Applicant must agree to attend the TVSP annual dinner and award meeting.
  • Applicant must agree to stay in the program for two years.
  • Applicant must agree to return the first ewe lamb that is acceptable to TVSP committee or a wether lamb if contract terms are not filled within two years.
  • Applicant must agree to castrate the ram lambs for the first two years in the project.
  • Applicant must agree to pay $10.00 for two years of insurance on ewe.
  • Applicant must agree to follow the rules listed in the application agreement.
  • Those that have participated previously are eligible to apply again.

Breeding Ewe Project Record Book

Treasure Valley Sheep Producers will provide a record book for your project. The focus of the TVSP Breeding Ewe Project is on production and record-keeping.

  • Goals for your breeding animals.
  • Arrangements for financing project.
  • Record of feed expenses.
  • Record of other expenses.
  • Record of your project income.
  • Financial summary of your project expenses and income.
  • Records for yearly breeding records.
  • Individual ewe record to keep track of lamb information.
  • A 145 day sheep gestation table to help you know when your lambs will be born.
  • Record of your demonstrations to other members or clubs.
  • Record of other activities relating to sheep.
  • A short story about your TVSP sheep project.
  • Picture or pictures of your projects.

Replace Ewe Insurance Program

Due to death or other circumstances, the project ewe will be replaced by an acceptable ewe. In the case of negligence, the project ewe will not be replaced.

  • Cost $5.00 per year for two years. Total cost is $10.00.
  • TVSP committee member must be notified of death or injury of ewe.

Awards Based on Overall Points

  • 30 Points are earned for your Farm visit.
  • 10 Points are earned for your Test of Knowledge.
  • 10 Points are earned for your Record Keeping.
  • 10 Points are earned for your Current Year Production.
  • 10 Points are earned for Attending/Exhibiting your Project Animal at the TVSP Expo.
           10 Points for First place.
           9 Points for Second place.
           8 Points for Third place.
           6 Points for All Other places.
  • 10 Points are earned for your Attending Workshops.
  • 20 Points for Attending/Exhibiting your Project Animal at the Canyon County Fair.
           10 Points for First place.
           9 Points for Second place.
           8 Points for Third place.
           6 Points for All Other places.

Husbandry Practices

  • Heath Program.
  • Nutritional Program.
  • Animal Appearance.
  • Facilities.
  • Breeding Program.

Project Animal

  • Ewe and current year production. Example two lambs that weigh 150 lbs. and have a rate of gain of 1 lb per day.
  • Project Ewe.
  • Ewe total lifetime production. Example one lamb the first year at 100 lbs., two lambs the next year at 115 lbs., and three lambs the third year at 150 lbs. equal a lifetime production of 780 lbs. of lamb.
  • Current year lamb production.
  • Average daily gain of lambs
  • Loin eye measurement - these will be obtain at the Canyon County Fair.

  • Award for Farm visit.
  • Award for Test of Knowledge.
  • Award for Record Keeping.
  • Award for Current Year Production.
  • Award for Project Animal.
  • Award for Attending Workshops.
